orchestrate, cross-check and put to strategic use information of
relevance to the protection and improvement of Europe's
environment. The Agency, based in Copenhagen, Denmark, has a
mandate defined by Council Regulation (EEC) No. 1210/90 to ensure
the supply of objective, reliable and comprehensive information at
European level, enabling its member states to take the requisite
measures to protect their environment, to assess the result of such
measures and to insure that the public is properly informed about
the state of the environment. The geographical scope of the
Agency's work is not confined to Member States of the EU;
membership is open to other countries that share the concerns of
the EU and member states and the objectives of the Agency. Current
membership includes all 15 EU states, as well as Iceland,
Liechtenstein and Norway. The Agency will carry out its tasks in
co-operation with the European Information and Observation Network
(EIONET). EIONET was set up and is co-ordinated by the Agency.
EIONET consists of national networks, organised by the Agency to
help it retrieve information, identify special issues and produce

EIS - Environmental Information Systems
In large EIS (Environmental Information
Systems) (UIS in German), two important problems must be solved.
First, environmental questions touch upon a large number of fairly
different knowledge domains. These questions are normally addressed
by different autonomous systems which are usually heterogeneous,
both technically (such as different operating systems, programming
languages, etc.) and semantically (such as different data models).
The second problem is that environmental information kept by
authorities should be made available to the public. Nowadays,
emerging standards for open, distributed systems cope with the
first problem. Especially on a global scale, the World-Wide Web
(WWW) tackles the second problem. In 1996, it became possible to
combine these technologies which made them even more attractive for
environmental informations systems. EIS has worked extensively in
this field. It has concentrated on Four main aspects: developing a
federation architecture for the integration of the components of
the UIS Baden-Wrttemberg; enhancing WWW access to the metadata
information system environmental data catalogue (German
abbreviation: UDK) for the UIS Baden-Wrttemberg and the Austrian
Federal Ministry of Environment; evaluating CORBA implementations

Earth Science Information Management
System
The Earth Observing System (EOS) is an
integral part of NASA's Earth Science Enterprise, a long-term
global change research program designed to improve understanding of
the Earth's interrelated processes involving the atmosphere,
oceans, land surfaces, and polar regions. Data derived from EOS
instruments and other Earth science measurement systems are
particularly useful in understanding the causes and processes of
global climate change and the consequences of human activities. The
EOS Data and Information System component (EOSDIS) provides a
structure for data management and user services for products
derived from EOS satellite instruments to be launched over the next
two decades and other NASA Earth science data. Within the EOSDIS
framework, the Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) and
Cooperative Data Centers are responsible for providing data and
information services to support the global change research
community. These centers are responsible for data archival, product
development and distribution and user support. Although much of the
development has been in anticipation of the future launches of EOS
instruments, each of the EOSDIS DAACs now has significant data
holdings. They are distinguished from one another by their data
subject area. Linked by the EOSDIS Version 0 (V0) Information
Management System (IMS) users are able to search for and order data
from multiple data centers in a single session. The goals of the
EOSDIS V0 IMS are to facilitate Earth science research through
improved access to existing data and to serve as a prototyping
testbed for the EOSDIS Core System (ECS). The ECS is being built to
accomodate the tremendous amount of data expected from a new series
of EOS instruments to be launched beginning in 1998. The IMS

EPA EF - Environmental Protection Agency
EnviroFacts
The mission of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency is to protect human health and to safeguard the
natural environment - air, water, and land - upon which life
depends. EPA's purpose is to ensure that all Americans are
protected from significant risks to human health and the
environment where they live, learn and work; that national efforts
to reduce environmental risk are based on the best available
scientific information; that Federal laws protecting human health
and the environment are enforced fairly and effectively; that
environmental protection is an integral consideration in U.S.
policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic
growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry, and
international trade, and these factors are similarly considered in
establishing environmental policy; that all parts of
society-communities, individuals, business, state and local
governments, tribal governments-have access to accurate information
sufficient to effectively participate in managing human health and
environmental risks and that environmental protection contributes
to making our communities and ecosystems diverse, sustainable and
economically productive. It is also important because the United
States plays a leadership role in working with other nations to
protect the global environment. Some of the items faced within this

Food and Agricultural Organization
The Food and Agriculture Organization was
founded in October 1945 with a mandate to raise levels of nutrition
and standards of living, to improve agricultural productivity, and
to better the condition of rural populations. Today, FAO is the
largest autonomous agency within the United Nations system with 174
Member Nations plus the EC (Member Organization) and more than
1,500 professional staff. The Organization's 1996-97 biennial
budget was set at $650 million and FAO-assisted projects attract
more than $3,000 million per year from donor gencies and
governments for investment in agricultural and rural development
projects. Since its inception, FAO has worked to alleviate poverty
and hunger by promoting agricultural development, improved
nutrition and the pursuit of food security - the access of all
people at all times to the food they need for an active and healthy
life. The Organization offers direct development assistance,
collects, analyses and disseminates information, provides policy
and planning advice to governments and acts as an international
forum for debate on food and agriculture issues. FAO is active in
land and water development, plant and animal production, forestry,
fisheries, economic and social policy, investment, nutrition, food
standards and commodities and trade. It also plays a major role in
dealing with food and agricultural emergencies. A specific priority
of the Organization is encouraging sustainable agriculture and
rural development, a long-term strategy for the conservation and
management of natural resources. It aims to meet the needs of both
present and future generations through programmes that do not
degrade the environment and are technically appropriate,
economically viable and socially acceptable. Some of the items

SNDP - Sustainable Development Networking
Programme
The Sustainable Development Networking
Programme (SDNP) is a catalytic initiative to kick-start networking
in developing countries and to help people share information,
knowledge and expertise relevant to sustainable development to
better their lives. Initially launched in 12 pilot countries in
1992 as a follow-up programme to UNCED/ Agenda 21 (chapter 40), the
SDNP currently offers assistance in establishing connectivity to
national networks and the Internet, content provision and
aggregation, and user training in 40 developing nations and 36
small island developing states (SIDSnet). SDNP focuses on
cross-cutting issues. Information and Communication Technologies
[ICTs] are now fundamental to dealing with all development issues
in developing countries and cuts across UNDPs main areas of
concentration. It is a core tool needed to achieve Sustainable
Human Development (SHD) and one that can facilitate the
'leap-frogging' of developing countries into 21st century ICTs and
SHD goals. Some of the items faced within this site concern united
