EIS - Environmental Information Systems
In large EIS (Environmental Information Systems) (UIS in German), two important problems must be solved. First, environmental questions touch upon a large number of fairly different knowledge domains. These questions are normally addressed by different autonomous systems which are usually heterogeneous, both technically (such as different operating systems, programming languages, etc.) and semantically (such as different data models). The second problem is that environmental information kept by authorities should be made available to the public. Nowadays, emerging standards for open, distributed systems cope with the first problem. Especially on a global scale, the World-Wide Web (WWW) tackles the second problem. In 1996, it became possible to combine these technologies which made them even more attractive for environmental informations systems. EIS has worked extensively in this field. It has concentrated on Four main aspects: developing a federation architecture for the integration of the components of the UIS Baden-Wrttemberg; enhancing WWW access to the metadata information system environmental data catalogue (German abbreviation: UDK) for the UIS Baden-Wrttemberg and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Environment; evaluating CORBA implementations and focusing on their potential for utilization with UIS; and time-critical environmental emergency systems. Earth Science Information Management System
The Earth Observing System (EOS) is an integral part of NASA's Earth Science Enterprise, a long-term global change research program designed to improve understanding of the Earth's interrelated processes involving the atmosphere, oceans, land surfaces, and polar regions. Data derived from EOS instruments and other Earth science measurement systems are particularly useful in understanding the causes and processes of global climate change and the consequences of human activities. The EOS Data and Information System component (EOSDIS) provides a structure for data management and user services for products derived from EOS satellite instruments to be launched over the next two decades and other NASA Earth science data. Within the EOSDIS framework, the Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) and Cooperative Data Centers are responsible for providing data and information services to support the global change research community. These centers are responsible for data archival, product development and distribution and user support. Although much of the development has been in anticipation of the future launches of EOS instruments, each of the EOSDIS DAACs now has significant data holdings. They are distinguished from one another by their data subject area. Linked by the EOSDIS Version 0 (V0) Information Management System (IMS) users are able to search for and order data from multiple data centers in a single session. The goals of the EOSDIS V0 IMS are to facilitate Earth science research through improved access to existing data and to serve as a prototyping testbed for the EOSDIS Core System (ECS). The ECS is being built to accomodate the tremendous amount of data expected from a new series of EOS instruments to be launched beginning in 1998. Initially launched in 12 pilot countries in 1992 as a follow-up programme to UNCED/ Agenda 21 (chapter 40), the SDNP currently offers assistance in establishing connectivity to national networks and the Internet, content provision and aggregation, and user training in 40 developing nations and 36 small island developing states (SIDSnet). SDNP focuses on cross-cutting issues. Information and Communication Technologies [ICTs] are now fundamental to dealing with all development issues in developing countries and cuts across UNDPs main areas of concentration.
