The «Euronet/Diane» System: Towards a European Data Bank

The «Euronet/Diane» system is a system for the distribution of information set up by the European Economic Community in order to assist the Member States in their information and documentation activities. Its creation was decided upon in a Resolution of June, 1971, on the basis of which the Committee for Scientific and Technical Information and Documentation (CIDST) was also set up to carry out assisting and consulting work. From the spring of 1980, the network for the transmission of data became operative even if, provisionally, only documentary utilization is possible. The most pressing problems with regard to the actual availability of the information contained in the data bases are the multiplicity of the languages in which these documents are written and the diversity of the inquiry languages of each different system of the network. In the specific field of legal information the only data base which can, at present, be interrogated by the users of Euronet is CREDOC, but the data of the Italgiure system of the Italian Supreme Court will soon be available. For valid legal documentation, it will however be necessary, starting from now, to move towards a progressive unification of legal language.
