Guide to web sites on people with disabilities

Presentation of the Guide

In Internet there is a lot of information that can be useful to disabled people. But it is often difficult to find exactly the piece of information that is of interest. These searches demand still greater times and energies when they are carried out from persons with physical, psychical, sensory or learning difficulties.

The purpose of this guide is to facilitate the search in Internet of the information on disability issues.

The guided search can be done:

- by nation, that is the user can search for all web sites on disability issues in a nation (for example one can choose "Italy", and he/she will have the list of web sites on disability issues in Italy);

- by subject, that is the user can search for all web sites on a subject in the world (for example, one can choose the matter "technical aids", and he/she will have a list of web sites on "technical aids" in the world);

- by cross-references, that is the user can search for all web sites on a subject in a nation (for example one can choose the nation "Italy" and the matter "technical aids", and he/she will have a list of web sites on "technical aids" in Italy).

Sometime the result of a cross-references search can be "zero", that is "0": this happens when in a nation as regards a subject no web site is found.

It is also possible to visualize the list of all all web sites in this database: to such aim it is enough to click on the key "Cancel" and then on the key "Send".

The search by words:

- as far as web-sites titles, the search is carried out in the web sites original language;

- as far as the matters, the search is carried out in the language chosen by the user for the matters;

- the search is carried out at the same time both in the web sites titles and in the matters.

As examples:

- if the user types the words "vita indipendente", the result will give both all the web sites with the words "vita indipendente" in the title and all the web sites which are classified in the matter "vita indipendente" (or "independent living" in English language);

- if the user types the words "independent living", the result will give both all the web sites with the words " independent living" in the title and all the web sites which are classified in the matter " independent living" (or "vita indipendente" in Italian language);

- if the user types two or more words, the search is carried out like if were an exact phrase;

As an example: if one types the words "disabled child", the result will list all the web site with the expression "disabled child" in the title, but it will not list web sites with the expression "disabled and child" in the title;

- the search is carried out just on web sites title and on subjects. As a consequence it is often of no utility to "mask" words. Anyway, when it can be helpful to mask words, one must not use asterisk:

- For example: if one types "disab" and clicks on the key "Send", the search result will list both "disabled" and "disabilities".

Once the search result is carried out, if the user clicks on one of the three cases of the first line of the result (title, subject, nation), web sites will be listed in alphabetical order, respective based on the title, or for subject, or for nation.
