OBIETTIVO
LOIS is a Demonstration Project co-financed by the European Commission under the e-Content Program; the negotiation phase was succesfully concluded in summer 2003 and the contract is expected to be signed in november. The Project’s duration is 24 months.
The main objective of LOIS is the localization of WordNets describing the legal domain into 6
different European languages, namely Italian, English, German, Czech, Portuguese and
Dutch. The synsets (or concepts) of these WordNets will be linked across them, in such a way
to guarantee cross lingual access to European legislation and other legal documents (such as
court cases). The citizen and/or the professional user will then be enabled to enter queries to
a legal documentation base into his/her language and retrieve also documents written in
different languages.
The consortium is aware of the fact that such cross European access to legal information
heavily relies on the commercial opportunities disclosed by the availability of interlinked legal
WordNets. The involvement of publishers and software vendors is aimed to push the
consortium to go towards market exploitation already at an early project stage.
