The Institute's research activity, according to autonomous plan, involves fundamental and applied research in various disciplinary sectors that are related to the themes that make up the Institute's areas of interest. This may entail, through a series of conventions, the involving of other research institutions such as public and private, Italian and non-Italian universities and research institutes.

Following the entry into force (1 June 2005) of the Rules of organization of the CNR, the research activity is structured on research job orders / work packages.
