The catalogue of Italian art with iconographical analysis, realized with the use of the computer

In 1972, at Villa «I Tatti» - the Florentine centre of Harvard University for the study of the Italian Renaissance – the A. was entrusted with the task of creating an iconographical index of Italian painting, including also the iconography of saints. To achieve this project it was decided to make use of a computer, adopting the STAIRS system of IBM for storing and retrieving the collected data. The subject of the pilot project was the Trecento Rimini school of painting. In the 1975, on the initiative of professor Previtali, the University of Siena collaborated at the Villa «I Tatti» with the purpose of creating a section of the file devoted to the «corpus» of Sienese art. While, still during the same period, professor Barocchi and professor Middeldorf asked to take part in the project and present a programme of the «Scuola Normale Superiore» of Pisa concerning the study of the documentary material on the history of art collections. The use of electronic techniques for processing data allowed the three sections resulting from the project to be brought together in a single file, so that the user of the system can obtain contemporaneously all the information on the work of art he is interested in. In the article are illustrated the characteristics of the system used, as the methods used for setting it up and the used of the catalogue.
